By Janet Genevieve P. Mea, MD and Jefferson R. Pagsisihan, MD

Inspite of the unpredicatable weather of late, everybody was in high spirits, as the 2nd Philippine Society of Nuclear Medicine (PSNM) Sportsfest opened up to a sunny morning on the 9th of May 2008. The main driving force behind this event, Dr. Marlon Fetalvo of St. Luke’s Medical Center, started the ball rolling with words of welcome, as he acted as emcee on this occasion. The invocation was lead by Dr. Janet Genevieve Mea, also of St. Luke’s Medical Center.  Words of inspiration were delivered by PSNM President Dr. Consolation Obmerga of Rizal Medical Center, followed by the ceremonial ball toss to launch the 1st event of the day.

The volleyball tournament composed four teams from the various Nuclear Medicine departments of participating hospitals within Metro Manila. Teams consisted of consultants, residents and staff. The best of three games determined the winners, leading up to the finals. The Rizal Medical Center - Makati Medical Center group was hailed the champion. The 2nd, 3rd and 4th places went to the Ermita (Jose Reyes Memorial Medical Center, Philippine General Hospital and Manila Doctors Hospital) group, University of Sto. Tomas and St. Luke’s Medical Center, respectively.

After a sumptuous lunch, the badminton tournament commenced. Fifteen teams registered in the event and were grouped into four clusters. The winners of each cluster met in the semi-finals and the victors of which battled for the crown. Drs. Raymund Augustus Conlu and Arnold Isidro emerged as the champions, while Drs. Bonan Mendoza and Jerry Obaldo were runners-up.

Special awards were also given. The Best in Uniform was awarded to St. Luke’s Medical Center. Mr. Noel Santillan of Makati Medical Center and Dr. Raymund Augustus Conlu, were chosen as the Most Valuable Player in volleyball and badminton, respectively.
